Description
The nutritional mushroom from the Japanese tradition
Cultivated for over a thousand years in Japan, Shiitake (Lentinula edodes) is the most widely consumed edible mushroom in the world. Its Japanese name means "mushroom (také) of the oak (shii)", referring to the tree on which it naturally grows in Asian forests. A pillar of Japanese, Chinese and Korean cuisine for centuries, it also holds a prominent place in traditional pharmacopoeia, where it is valued both as a food and as a versatile nutritional support.
Shiitake stands out for its exceptional richness in bioactive compounds and essential nutrients. It notably contains lentinan, a β-glucan (1-3, 1-6) studied since the 1970s for its immunomodulatory properties, as well as eritadenine, a compound studied for its role in cholesterol balance. Shiitake is also a natural source of ergosterol (a precursor of vitamin D2), B vitamins (B2, B3, B5), copper, selenium and dietary fiber. Several published clinical trials (Gaullier et al., 2011; Dai et al., 2015; Morales et al., 2018) have studied its effects in humans on the immune system and cardiovascular balance.
Our Shiitake Nutrition•pro is a concentrated 10:1 extract of Lentinula edodes in vegetable capsules, the highest extraction ratio in our functional mushroom range. Each bottle contains 60 capsules, a complete 30-day course at 2 capsules per day, providing a daily intake of 1,800 mg of extract. A simple, single-ingredient formula, made in France.

Frequently asked questions
What is Shiitake and what are its benefits?
Shiitake (Lentinula edodes) is the most widely consumed edible mushroom in the world, cultivated for over a thousand years in Japan. Its name means in Japanese "mushroom (také) of the oak (shii)", referring to the tree on which it naturally grows in Asian forests.
Beyond its culinary role, Shiitake is studied for its immunomodulatory properties, its role in cardiovascular balance and its nutritional richness. It notably contains lentinan, a β-glucan (1-3, 1-6) studied since the 1970s, as well as eritadenine, studied for its role in cholesterol metabolism.
Our Shiitake capsule dietary supplement provides a concentrated 10:1 extract of Lentinula edodes, at a dose of 1,800 mg per day, for simple integration into your daily routine.
What is lentinan and what are its effects?
Lentinan is a β-glucan with a (1-3, 1-6) structure extracted from Shiitake. It is one of the most studied bioactive compounds in modern nutritional mycology, with scientific publications since the 1970s.
Lentinan interacts with immune system cells, particularly macrophages, NK cells and T lymphocytes, making it a well-documented natural immunomodulator. Several clinical studies (Gaullier et al., 2011; Dai et al., 2015) have demonstrated its role in supporting natural defenses in humans.
In Japan, lentinan has been classified as an immunotherapy drug since 1985, reflecting the level of scientific research accumulated on this compound.
Does Shiitake have an effect on cholesterol?
Shiitake contains a unique bioactive compound called eritadenine (2(R),3(R)-dihydroxy-4-(9-adenyl)-butyric acid), studied for several decades for its role in cholesterol metabolism.
A study published in 2018 (Morales et al.) demonstrated that aqueous Shiitake extracts inhibit HMG-CoA reductase in vitro, the key enzyme in cholesterol metabolism that is also the target of statins. The extracts also inhibit the angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE), involved in blood pressure regulation.
These in vitro study results suggest potential benefits of Shiitake for supporting cardiovascular balance, as a complement to a balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle. People taking cholesterol-lowering medication (statins) are advised to consult their doctor before use.
What are the bioactive compounds in Shiitake?
Shiitake is a nutritionally very rich mushroom that contains several families of bioactive compounds studied by research:
• Lentinan (β-glucan 1-3, 1-6): reference immunomodulatory compound, studied since 1970
• Eritadenine: compound studied for cholesterol metabolism
• Ergosterol: natural precursor of vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol)
• B vitamins (B2, B3, B5): involved in energy metabolism
• Copper and selenium: antioxidant minerals
• Polyphenols and flavonoids: natural antioxidant compounds
• Dietary fiber: supports digestive balance
This richness in bioactive compounds makes Shiitake one of the most versatile functional mushrooms from a nutritional standpoint.
What is the best time to take Shiitake?
Shiitake can be taken at any time of the day, according to your rhythm and preference. Its nutritional versatility makes it particularly suitable for consumption during a balanced meal, to optimize the absorption of fat-soluble compounds (especially ergosterol and associated vitamins).
Taking it in the morning or at noon is generally preferred to benefit from its B vitamin content (involved in energy metabolism). Shiitake has no stimulating or sedative effect, making it suitable for any time of the day.
A course of at least 30 days is recommended to fully benefit from its properties, as the bioactive compounds (lentinan, eritadenine) act progressively through accumulation.
Why does a 10:1 extract make a difference?
The 10:1 extraction ratio means that 10 kg of raw Shiitake are needed to obtain 1 kg of concentrated extract. It is the highest extraction ratio in our functional mushroom range (other products use a 4:1 ratio).
A higher ratio allows for a greater concentration of the mushroom's bioactive compounds (lentinan, eritadenine, polysaccharides) in the same amount of final extract. Concretely, 1,800 mg of our Shiitake 10:1 extract is equivalent to 18 g of raw mushroom, the equivalent of several culinary servings.
This level of concentration delivers a significant amount of active compounds in just 2 capsules per day, without having to consume large quantities of fresh or dried Shiitake daily.
Can Shiitake be combined with other functional mushrooms?
Yes, Shiitake pairs particularly well with the other functional mushrooms in our range, as their properties are complementary.
Relevant combinations: Shiitake + Reishi for complete immune and nervous system support; Shiitake + Chaga for antioxidant action and enhanced natural defenses; Shiitake + Cordyceps for athletes seeking to combine versatile nutrition and performance; Shiitake + Lion's Mane for those who want a comprehensive body + mind approach.
It is advisable to introduce mushrooms one at a time over a few days to observe individual tolerance, and to seek advice from a healthcare professional if taking several supplements simultaneously.
Is Shiitake a natural source of vitamin D?
Shiitake is one of the few foods naturally rich in ergosterol, a precursor of vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol). When Shiitake is exposed to UV rays (natural or artificial), ergosterol is converted into vitamin D2.
Our Shiitake dietary supplement provides a natural source of ergosterol, contributing to enriching your diet with vitamin D precursors. However, for targeted vitamin D intake (especially during winter or in cases of confirmed deficiency), direct supplementation with vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) remains the most effective option, as vitamin D3 is more bioavailable than D2 in humans.
Shiitake nevertheless remains an excellent complement to a balanced diet to naturally support the intake of essential micronutrients.
Are there any contraindications for Shiitake?
Shiitake is generally well tolerated in capsule extract form, but certain precautions should be observed.
It is not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women, due to insufficient safety data during these periods. Consumption is also not recommended for children and adolescents.
People taking anticoagulant, immunosuppressant or cholesterol-lowering (statin) medication should consult their doctor before use, as Shiitake may interact with these classes of medications. In the case of an allergy to mushrooms or a history of Shiitake dermatitis (a rare skin reaction occurring after consumption of raw or undercooked Shiitake), it is recommended to seek advice from a healthcare professional before use.
For adults only. Do not exceed the recommended daily dose. A dietary supplement is not a substitute for a varied and balanced diet or a healthy lifestyle.
